The Academy is held each year on the Boise State University Campus. Boise State University established a criminal justice major over 30 years ago, and is one of the largest undergraduate programs in the Northwest United States. Currently, Boise State offers an Associate of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, and a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Administration. The faculty and students of the Department of Criminal Justice Administration are active in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), the flagship, national criminal justice organization which meets yearly in locations across the country. Faculty and students are also active in the Western and Pacific Association of Criminal Justice Educators, a regional affiliate of ACJS, which meets yearly in the Western United States. Preparation
Each student is expected to come to the Academy prepared as an active participant. The IVAA curriculum textbook covers material on each topic that will be addressed throughout the week of the Academy. The IVAA textbook will be sent to students approximately six weeks prior to the start of instruction. Students are expected to read the materials provided prior to the beginning of instruction so as to ensure a common foundation for all participants.
Class Requirements
Attendance at all classes and team building activities is mandatory. College credit, continuing education units, P.O.S.T. credit, and National Advocate Crediting through the Nation Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) also require attendance at all sessions. Students are expected to turn off cell phones (they may be set to vibrate in the case of emergency) – there will be ample time to return calls during breaks. Students are asked to respect that interruptions during class time are distracting to the learning process and the Academy is an opportunity to fully engage in the classroom experience.
The expectation is that students will not have to attend to work responsibilities while attending the Academy.
